Velma Miller

Velma Arlene (Long) Miller, age 97, of Lamar, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2020. She was born to Harley and Freda (Yount) Long on June 24, 1922 in Vernon County, Missouri.    Velma attended Bakers Grove Grade School before attending Liberal High School. On October 25, 1941 she married George Frederick Miller of Irwin, Missouri. They lived on their farm in the Irwin community for 49 years until George’s death in 1991. Velma then moved to Lamar, Missouri. She worked at the Big Smith Clothing factory in Lamar from 1953 until its closure and continued at the factory in Carthage. After leaving Big Smith she worked at Dot’s Gift Shop and finished her work career as a cashier at The Blue Top Restaurant. Velma was devoted to her family and enjoyed quilting, gardening, cooking, baking and dancing. She was a member of the Lamar First Baptist Church and the Lamar women’s Sew & Sew Club.    Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George and son Lawrence; four brothers, Marvin, Howard, Linden and Dayton Long; a sister, Leta Alumbaugh Skief and a nephew, David Hanneman.    She is survived by her daughters, Carol Anne Farrell and spouse Jim Farrell, Overland Park, Kansas, Susan Splitter and spouse August Splitter, Lamar, Missouri; daughter-in-law Dorothy (Walker) Miller, Liberal, Missouri; and her sister Mary Hanneman, Belton, Missouri. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Joel Miller, Lawrence Splitter, Christopher Splitter, Adam Splitter, Michelle (Farrell) Emerson, Stephanie (Farrell) Strick and Elizabeth (Farrell) Feris, as well as eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.    The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday January 10, 2020 at Daniel Funeral Home with burial to follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery.    The family will receive friend from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.    Contributions are suggested and made payable to Barone Alzheimer’s Care Center Activities Department in care of Daniel Funeral Home.    Condolences may be shared at www.dfhlamar.com
