Lee Poteet

Leroy Keith Poteet, age 88, of Lamar, passed away Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Barton County Memorial Hospital.      Lee was born December 12, 1925, in Macon, Missouri to Ishmael and Sarah (Dodd) Poteet.  In 1947, he married Ellen Marshall and they made their home and reared their family in Denver, Colorado.  While in Denver, Lee worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years and as a sales manager for Joslins Department Store. After Ellen’s death in 1987, Lee moved back to Missouri where he married Mary Ellen Warner in 1992.  She preceded him in death in 2001.  He was also preceded in death by his son, Roy Marshall Poteet who died at the age of 31 in an avalanche accident.      Known as someone who never met a stranger, Lee had a genuine love for people and a willingness to share his time and talent for the benefit of others.  He was an excellent cook and hospitable host whose door was always open. Lee was an avid outdoorsman who hunted, fished and traveled the country.  A natural, self-taught musician, he played guitar throughout his life and especially enjoyed the company of his fellow musicians in the local bluegrass band, “Barely Able”.  Lee was an active member of Milford Christian Church.      Survivors include his daughter, Annette Choszczyk of Paonia, Colorado; a step-granddaughter, Sarah Choszczyk; cousins, Stephen L. and Rosielea Gash of Milo, Missouri; and a special friend, Sylvia Sanders of Lamar.      A celebration of Lee’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 19th, at Milford Christian Church.  Burial will be in Howell Cemetery.      The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Daniel Funeral Home.      Memorial contributions are suggested to Barton County Memorial Hospital in care of the funeral home.
