Larry Joe Cox, age 68, of Lamar, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin following a short illness.
Larry was born August 12, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri to Wilburn Edward and Maxine (Copelin) Cox. In 1952, Larry moved with his family from Arkansas to Barton County. After graduating from Lamar High School in 1963 he began a fifty year career in the family saw mill business. Larry quickly mastered his craft while working with his father and became the owner/operator of Cox & Son Lumber in 1980. His customers easily became his friends and Larry will be remembered by many for his hospitality, quick wit, and ready smile. He was a member of Lamar Elks Lodge.
On December 25, 1963, Larry married Marlene Metcalf and she survives of the home. Also surviving are two sons, Kenny Cox of Lamar and Terry (Carol) Cox of Jefferson City, Missouri; a daughter, Julie (Cory) Pitts of Lamar; a sister, Wilburta (Jim) Arrowood of Napoleonville, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Hillary, Kealon, Kyler, Kaleb and Chloe; and a host of good friends and neighbors.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 17th at Daniel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.
