Lance Riley Adkins Sr., age 66, of Lamar, Missouri, passed away on April 20, 2025, at Good Shepherd Community Care in Lockwood, Missouri.
Lance was born on May 29, 1958, in Wichita, Kansas, to Perry Oliver Adkins Sr. and Nancy Louise Riley. He graduated from high school in Fredonia, Kansas, and spent much of his life in Kansas and Texas before settling in Golden City for several years, and finally in Lamar, where he lived for the last 14 and a half years.
Lance had been a resident at Good Shepherd since mid-February, where he quickly became well-liked by both staff and fellow residents. Known for his sharp wit and love of banter, Lance always appreciated a good joke, especially if it came from those taking care of him. His humor and warmth left a lasting impression.
Lance was a man full of life and creativity. He enjoyed working with his hands, often crafting wooden keepsakes. An admirer of all forms of art, he especially loved the outdoors—fishing, camping, and tending to roses, his favorite flower. He had a strong work ethic and once worked for Boeing, painting airplanes. His generous spirit meant he never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need.
A proud veteran, Lance served over two years in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged. He remained passionate about supporting Native American schools and donated annually to ensure students had access to meals and education.
Lance had a deep love for classic rock, with "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas being his favorite song, which will be played during his Celebration of Life. He also had a childlike joy for cartoons and was known for his endless supply of jokes and stories that kept everyone laughing.
He cherished his family deeply. A devoted husband and father, Lance was always protective—especially during storm season, when he could be found on the porch watching the skies while his loved ones stayed safe indoors. He loved the Lord and credited his faith with guiding and saving him throughout his life.
Lance is survived by his beloved wife, Christina Doss-Adkins; 11 children: Kayla (Chris) Kaul, Mary Misasi, Nancy Misasi, Melissa Row, Elizabeth Row, Hanna Doss-Adkins, Trevor Doss-Adkins, Gracelynn Doss-Adkins, Lance Applegate, Christopher Applegate and Michael Applegate; one brother, Perry Adkins Jr.; two sisters, Renee (Jack) Row and Nancy Adkins; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Gary Adkins, and his first wife, Terri Adkins.
