Joseph Lynn Brewer, age 68, of Golden City, Missouri passed away August 5, 2023, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
Joe was born June 4, 1955 in Hawarden, Iowa to Lyle John Brewer and Phyllis Jean (Dewey) Brewer. Joe graduated from Golden City High School in 1973. On June 29, 1984, Joe married Sherry Pennell at Pleasant View Baptist Church, and to this union one child was born, Lena Ann Brewer on October 26,1998 at Barton County Memorial Hospital.
Joe had a paper route when he was young and often helped his dad in the general store that his dad owned in Hawarden, Iowa. At the age of 8, the family moved to Golden City, MO. To help with the bills for his dad, Joe started working as a janitor at age 14, with the "Economic Youth Security Program" at Golden City R-III School. After graduating high school, Joe was hired on full time as a janitor at the school in 1974 where he worked until he retired in 2011 after 35 years. During this time he worked at Gilkey's Garage in Lamar, MO. He also went through the Mills Anderson Police Academy (at MSSU) in Joplin, MO. He then became a reserve police officer for the Golden City Police Department under Lonnie Pennell. Joe was a member of IOOF Cemetery Board, a Golden City School Board member, a member of Golden City City Council, former Mayor of Golden City, Golden City Road board member and a moderator at Newport Baptist Church. He also served on the Golden City Fire Department board and was a member of Golden City MFA. Joe was an avid flea marketer and collected many things, especially tools.
Survivors include his daughter, Lena Brewer along with a host of nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Ralph; one sister-in-law, Deb; one aunt, Beverly and his best friend, Tom Elliott.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Daniel Funeral Home with burial to follow in Pippenger Cemetery in Lockwood, Missouri.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at the funeral home.
Contributions are suggested and made payable to either Newport Baptist Church or St. Jude Children's Hospital in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
