Gary Shaw

Gary Wayne Shaw of Golden City, Missouri, passed on Thursday, June 4th, 2020, at the age of 77. After several years of fighting cancer, Gary died peacefully holding the hands of his lifelong wife and devoted daughter and son. Gary was born on February 1st, 1943, in Celina, TX, to father Donald W. Shaw and mother Desi Casey Shaw. He was the middle child with an older brother, and younger sister. At a young age, his family moved out to the coast, where Gary grew up underneath the bright California sun. Graduating high school in 1961, Gary enlisted in the United States Army. Where he then served one term before being discharged honorably. In the summer of 1965, Gary then met the love of his life, Donna. His sister-in-law worked with Donna at the hospital, and insisted she meet Gary. Donna worked evenings, so going out to dinner was difficult. The only place open was the drive-up A&W. Gary, being a “car guy,” had handed Donna many napkins, a gesture she perceived to be thoughtful and sweet. Only to find out he “wanted to clean any messes she made quickly!” She married him anyway, on October 9th, 1965. Gary was also a “workin’ man,” he’d say. As a carpenter Gary built many houses along the coast of California, and he continued after moving his family out to Missouri in the early 70’s. In addition to houses, he built businesses, barns, porches, and cabinets. He kept up his woodworking in his later years, even “supervising” building a crib that now holds his great-grandson. Gary built a garden nearly every year of his life, where he grew “the best tomatoes in Barton County.” He had raised dogs many years as well, caring for them in cold winter nights and on hot summer days. One of these dogs went on to serve our community through local law enforcement. Though Gary built many things in his life, if you asked him what his proudest achievement was, it would be family. He passed on years of knowledge to his children and grandchildren about his woodworking and gardening. It is through those memories Gary will live on in our hearts. Gary was proceeded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Donna Lee Shaw; his brother Dwain B. (Carol) Shaw; sister Dawna (Mark) Hatcher; his children Kara Lee (Charles) Hamman, Christopher Keith Shaw, and foster daughter, Tyleen (Ed) Caffrey; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.   A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2020 at Daniel Funeral Home with burial to follow at Lake Cemetery with Military Honors. Contributions are suggested to the Shaw family in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
